I am a medical student who tutors KS3, GCSE, and A level science and maths. I believe in gearing lessons for the individual and building confidence while working towards learning goals.
With a 4 year experience of tutoring (both online and in person), I have seen the importance of delivering lessons that gear towards a specific student's needs in a way a larger classroom is not able to. My lessons involve getting to know the individual student - learning style, likes and dislikes, subject goals and so on. From doing this I am able to build lesson plans that meet individual students' needs. Past students have shown great improvements with this method; in reaching their goal grade for their subject, but more importantly in building a confidence in their abilities which will last past the exam.
I have had past experience tutoring a wide variety of students. I have previously tutored younger students focusing on the 11+; from this learning the importance of using a variety of methods to keep students engaged. Recently i have tutored more GCSE and A level students. I have both tutored students who needed an extra challenge due to being beyond the work provided by school, and students who benefited from a different learning style from how they were taught in school and once lesson were adapted that way began to thrive.
I tend to structure my lessons for the individual student. I use the first lesson to get to know the student, through asking questions such as what subjects they tend to enjoy or do better at and while? How they feel they like to learn? And what they want to achieve from the lessons (this is were the parent's input is also important).? Once all this i established I make lesson plans that focus on an interactive format - using questions and continual back and forth communication.
I have worked with a variety of exam boards: OCR, WJEC, Edexcel. Using the exam board specification is a key part of how I structure lessons.
My previous students meet the academic goals we set out with at the start out lessons. Previous example are 11+ passes to reach their desired school, and reaching beyond GCSE maths target grades.
